KENZIE

I spent all day being nervous about this date, but as Gavin and I stroll hand in hand through the park watching the sunset, I don’t remember why.

Being with him feels so … natural. Like I’ve known him for months instead of hours. Wow, I’ve really known the man for less than forty-eight hours. I was worried he’d think I was a little crazy and way more outgoing than I really am. Thank you, cosmos.

“Did you always know you wanted to be a cop?” I ask him as we near a lookout point that offers one of the most amazing views of the sunset I’ve ever seen. We find our own corner where no one crowds us.

“Since I was a kid. My dad and my uncle were police officers, too. Kind of ran in the family.” He tucks me in front of him, and I lean against the railing. Gavin stands behind me, wrapping his arms around me like a protective, warm blanket. His chin rests on my shoulder.

“Were?” I ask.

“My dad retired a couple years ago. My uncle passed away.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

He kisses my cheek, leaving my skin tingling from the contact. I’ve been dying to kiss the man since the moment I saw him in the bakery, but he seems set on making me wait. Ordinarily, I would never move too fast, but with Gavin it doesn’t feel that way. I want him to stay with me tonight. To sleep in my bed. But I’ve been too shy to ask.

“My uncle was a brave man. Saved my dad by taking a bullet for him.”

I shiver at the thought, wondering if Gavin has ever faced a similar situation. Again, I’m too afraid to ask. I don’t know if I want to know the answer. I know he’s brave and intimidating, so I don’t doubt he would.

“Do you ever get scared?” I ask.

“Sure.”

It’s not the answer I expected. I turn my head over my shoulder, which brings our lips so close together. I still taste peppermint whenever I think about that kiss. “And you keep going back to work?”

“It’s more than a job,” he says. “It’s a calling.”

I spin in his arms to face him. This time when I kiss him, it’s not just because he’s a crazy hot man in my proximity. It’s because he’s also a very heroic one.

It takes seconds for our kiss to become inappropriate for public consumption. It’s a battle to keep my hands from his cock, because the damn things don’t seem to want to go anywhere else. “Will you come back to my place?” I ask, but instantly I realize how desperate that sounds. “Maybe we can watch a movie or something? I have ice cream.”

“What kind?”

“Snickerdoodle cookie dough.”

“How could I turn that down?”
